It's just like diabetes in humans--it involves testing their blood glucose several times a day, giving insulin shots, etc. It's treatable but very expensive and stressful. Lucky is a particularly aggressive and stressful cat. The vets had a very difficult time even getting blood work from him, let alone dealing with it several times a day. He's 13 yrs. old (around 75 in human years) Initially, they need to be hospitalized so the vets can monitor several times daily to determine the proper dose of insulin needs. In cats stressed like Lucky, they tend to give false readings and it's very difficult to get a correct reading. Basically, our vet didn't feel Lucky would tolerate all that without tearing us up and completely stressing himself out. So we've just gotta talk it over and see what to do. We can give oral meds that will help a little and give him a little more time.
