Unhappy Any idea what he is?

This little guy was brought into our hospital last night by a good samaritan. They found him hopping along the road, unable to fly. His feet, tail feathers and one wing were covered in tar of some sort (asphalt or roof, we're not sure). They started removing the tar last night but we have no idea what he is. He's banded and we called the number, but they have to pull his info from a database and mail it to us. I thought I'd share his story (it just broke my heart) and see if any of you knew what he was.

I'm not sure offhand...

What's the location again? Usually the zip guides are pretty good for identification

He sure is pretty though! Poor thing

He was found in Charlotte. The office zip is 28078.

He's absolutely gorgeous and was so good while the tech was starting to take some of it off. It was soo sad.

We think he's definitely wild and a bird of prey of some sort. Whether he was released or trapped to monitor population, we're not sure. He was definitely stressed being in the clinic, poor thing.

Hmm, I'm wondering if he's an American Kestrel. We were looking it up and the girl who was looking didn't think so and wouldn't look when I suggested it ... but this looks pretty close.

Just a note, the Carolina Raptor Center (the first link I posted, above) came and got this guy from the clinic today. I'll know more when I get to work, but at least he's in the right hands!

he's beautiful Jade!! I was almost thinking some sort of a hawk, but it looks like you were more on the right track.

I would love to find out what he is!

I'm pretty fairly certain he's a Kestrel, just waiting on the papers to confirm this. I emailed the raptor center to see how he was doing and will keep you all updated.

What a beautiful bird! I think he looks like a Kestrel of some sort, I have seen similar birds around here, in the country..

Once you said he was some sort of Raptor a Kestral came to mind for me. I don't know if it was my computer or your picture, but the picture was so small I could hardly see anything.

If you get anything like that in again, covered with tar, etc., the wildlife clinic I went to said to us Dawn to get it off with.

Thanks Donna. I actually emailed you a much larger version of the pic, too (did you click on the thumbnail?). The tar had completely dried and soap wasn't taking it off, but mayonnaise did, oddly enough.

He's soo cute! I'm gad he's in good hands now, he could have died.

The wonders of mayonnaise, I guess it's the same as peanut butter.
