Baby Black Footed Ferrets

The Smithsonian Zoo is attempting to reintroduce the black footed ferret out of possible extinction (they are the most endangered species in the world) by using the artificial insemination process for breeding purposes. I was not aware that black footed ferrets generally do not mate because they are VERY picky and are either incomptible genetically or proper mating postions cannot be obtained. you can read more about this here.

Here is their first litter of babies!!

I agree, they are adorable. Thanks for sharing Kay. I had no idea any ferret breed was near extinction.

I was fortunate enough to be given a "behind the scenes tour" of the Louisville (KY) zoo several years ago, hosted by the veterinarian who was the director of the zoo. L'ville zoo is one of the few facilities where they have a black-footed ferret area set up in an attempt to breed, thus increasing the number of these little guys back into the world.

I had never heard of them at that time and it was a very interesting and informative visit.

Thanks for sharing your information!!

(And of course I tried my best to get him to let me hold one of them. Since he couldn't do that he let me pet a lion that he had raised from a cub instead!!)
