Smile I saved a turtle today!!!

I saved a turtle today!! YAY!

I live on a lake and I there is a "stray" pedal boat in front of my house. The turtle was stuck at the bottom of the pedal boat where the pedals are. No idea how it got there. There was a little bit of water in there because of the rain, maybe it wanted so sit in the sun and got stuck.

At first I thought it was dead cause it wasn't moving. Then it moved.

The first time I try to grab it, he/she (i'll just call it it) slipped out of my hands cause the edge of the shell was soft (but hard in the middle). Then it was still sitting in there staring at me and coming toward me, weird.

The second time was a success. Let me tell you that it was heavy, and, as gently as I could, I let it drop in the lake. It was confused and then just swam away.

Wow so glad it was still alive. The pedal boat isn't even mine. During storms down here all kind of boats just float to my property. I don't use the thing cause it's not mine.

Anyways, just wanted to share!!!

Oh it was weird looking too!! I couldn't take any pictures. I immediately googled to find out what kind it was. It was a Florida soft shell (there I was thinking its shell was getting soft cause it was dying). HA!

and here it is:

Apparently they can be very aggressive and can bite hard. Glad I didn't get bit. (it would have been great to know before I tried to grab it haha!!) They also eat small amphibians and sometime chicks (baby duck) and there are a bunch of them on the lake this time of year.

The one I picked up was about 18-20 inches long and 15 inches wide and HEAVY!!

Anyways it made my day!! Saved wildlife and learned something new!!

Glad you saved it - and really glad you didn't get hurt. That thing looks like it could be vicious!!

I have a friend here who found a red-earred slider in his driveway some time ago - now the turtle lives in a nice aquarium in the house and has a great life!

nah, i think its better to find out it could hurt you like that AFTER you save it, because you would have ended up doing the same thing but with more fear hehe.

He's cute

Congrats!
I bet he didn't bite you because he new you were trying to help! lol
I love it when things like that happen ( people saving wildlife, not wildlife getting stuck lol)
And at moments like that I wish animals could talk because you just know they would turn around and say "hey, you know what, thanks a bunch!"
congrats!

Good job saving it! My parents live across the street from a pond so I've done my share of turtle rescues too!

That is SO cool. I have never seen a turtle like that before. And that thing was HUGE. I couldn't even imagine running into something like that. He/she must have weighed a ton! LOL. Great job saving it.
