Question Strange chrysalis/cocoon

I am putting in a pool in my back yard, and while digging ysterday I discovered a really large chrysalis. Wondering if anyone has seen one and/or know what it is.

Hard to tell from the photos, but it looks like one of the cicadas.

If it's empty, it means the grub has left it and is feeding on plant roots.

I have no idea what it is, but I just have to tell you...

I looked at these pictures before I went to bed last night, and I had a nightmare where all of Dudley's super worms started morphing into those things. It freaked me out!

"For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older than ours they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethen, they are not underlings; they are other nations caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendor and travail of the earth."

Needs closer inspection, but most likely a hawkmoth cocoon of some sort...it should be relatively easy to search species for your locale.
