I have a degu Joey who lives on his own (his brother died 3 years ago from a tumour). He's next to a cage with 2 other male degus and they talk through the bars but have never got on well enough to put them all together.
Anyway he's 6 and a half years old, it's only as of recently that he's started showing his age. I bought a wheel, like a spinning sourcer, he loved it. But about a month ago, we noticed he was starting to hobble a little n his left side. He was constantly turning when on this wheel and we figured it wasn't good for his spine, so we've removed it fully.
He can't use a standard wheel as he used to have a mesh bottom cage, and despite covering the mesh with cardboard he has cuts on his feet that keep appearing. (It's not bumblefoot).
We let him run around on the bed occassionally for exercise, but recently he's been rather quiet. He's not really interested in toys, although he loves attention. He allows us to stroke and groom him and nibbles back too. He used to lift his arm up for us to stroke under his belly but as of late his left side seems to be a bit funny.
I'm not sure if what we're seeing is just stiffness in muscles or if he's potentially injured himself on the wheel.
If anyone can provide any advice or information on similar experiences, it would be greatly appreciated.
