Smile Degu noises

I just got a Degu and he is making all kinds of noises. chirps, grunts, and squeaks. Does anyone know what they mean?

Just one degu? They need to be kept in pairs or groups . Sorry if you knew that already!

Chirps are usually used to communicate with other degus, grunts can be a grumpy noise (but I'd have to hear it since "grunt" could mean a few things), and the squeaks mean different things depending on the volume and frequency.

Thanks. I didnt know they made so many noises till I got him.

I do know that they are usually kept in pairs but he is 2 years old and has been on his own for almost the whole time. I fear introducing another one could do more harm than good.

Yeah, they're vocal critters!

If you have the chance to get a baby or young degu of the same sex, it might be worth a shot. I've introduced adults multiple times without any problems. The key is to take it slow. Most of the people who end up with nasty fights introduced them too quickly. The average lifespan of the degu seems to be about 5-7 years right now so your degu is still pretty young .
