My first Degu! I'm so ! Degu Baby (as I affectionately named her) was sitting by the cage door seemingly having a staring contest with me. I went right up to her cage and she started a soft and slow warbly/guinea pig squeak. What was she saying to me? I then went to get her treat. I opened her cage door, she hopped into my palm to steal the treat, then she ran to a corner of her cage "Squarbling" (as I call it) and ate her treat. Was this Degu lingo for "Thank You, so much!"

The warbling is a contented call that they make when they are happy they make it a lot to one another. The other noise you mention the squeaking noise when you gave her the treat is her probably saying "its my treat leave it alone" they make that noise a lot with one another to warn each other to keep away they also make it with their owners when they have something they don't want anyone to have, they are very very vocal

I felt better knowing it was her way of saying, "Thank You for the treat!" ...not, "Bug off, it's mine!"

Our degus just love attention, but the screach that comes out of them when they go to "investigate" what the other is eating is soooo comical, Kale usually jumps and squeals at cinder, good thing there are 2 bowls in the cage. Our dog Buddy just loves to play with them and they really give her a teasing run for her money. I never thought I would like degus but since my daughter brought the one home (then told me he would get depressed without company) and my husband and I brought a friend home for him, I can't picture being without them now, they bring laughs to the house with their antics.
