Smile Degu Tail

Hi , I am new to Paw-Talk and I just wanted to say that I am so excited that I will be able to talk to my fellow Degu and and other animal lovers. I own 12 Degus, Lucy a female who is 4 years old, Degu a male who is 2 years old and peeko a 1 year old female, then there are lucy's children, junior (male), Dini (male), and Peach (female), they are all 6 months old. Peeko had 6 children last week, 2 boys 4 girls. Anyways enough about my babies.
A freind of mine has 3 degus, one of which is a female and had 5 kits around 4 months ago, everything was going fine until one of my freinds children picked up a baby degu by the tail and the tail fell off. Now they dont trust the children with the degus and have asked me to take them and adopt them out. My question is, can I do anything to help this little guy with the missing tail? I also want to know if anyone wants to adopt some degu's, good homes only please. I live in British Columbia, Canada, and will travel to give degus to the right home, also, any degus that I adopt out, come with a care package of food toys, etc. I can also help with cages. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me

Lois Isabel

Awh, sorry to hear about the tail mishap and that you have to find some homes for them. Best of luck.

from what i've heard degus can function pretty much normally without a tail however if he hasn't been to a vet since it happened take him straight away there is usually bone left which can become septic and kill the degu other than that im told they can live normal happy lives

Hi everyone, thank you all for replying so quickly. I did take the little gaffer to the vet about 2 weeks ago. She isnt much of a degu expert but she was able to tell me that it is healing nicely. I should have explained myself better in my first post. The injury is located at the tip of the tail, there is a tiny bit of bone exposed but there seems to be hair growing around it, what I am wondering is whether the bone will be covered with skin and hair eventually or if it will be exposed forever. Since I am planning on adopting this little boy out is there anything that I should tell his potential owners about his tail? I want him to have the best home possible, someone who wont let their young children handle degu's unnattended, like this guys previous owner . If anyone knows of someone looking for young happy, playful degu's let me know. Im praying these little ones will find good homes Thanks again

This may be a little offtopic but it still involves a tail. I've noticed that one of my degus that had a decent looking tail now has all the hair removed care of her cage mate. They've never had spectacular looking tails, is there anything I can do to encourage more fuller looking ones?

Nothing you can do really if the degus are over preening each other, one of mine once pulled his brothers fur out from his ear, those little bits that stick out and he had them missing till the day his brother died and then they started to grow back As long as its just the fur i wouldn't be over worried and will probably stop in time
