Degu's Diet...

This may seem strange, but I can't find Chinchilla pellets anywhere. All the Chinchilla foods are mixes...A good degu diet is a 50/50 mix of guinea pig and chinchilla pellets, or so I've heard. Is there something else I can mix? Like hamster/gerbil pellets or rabbit pellets or something?

I give my degus a mix of guinea pig food and guinea pig pellets,( in the past also rabbit pellets) I have found chinchilla pellets have a lot of fat in them, so I don't give it to them anymore.. Hope this helps..

Thanks a bunch for replying so fast! ^_^ So you get the mixed guinea pig food and pellets and you mix them 50/50? Becuase we already have guinea pig pellets here...Also, don't guinea pig mixes have fruit and stuff in them? Do you just take it out? I wouldn't know, I've never had a guinea pig...I just babysat one who just ate pellets.

I buy the guinea pig food separately, and mix with the pellets.. I have found that most guinea pig food does not contain fruit, and I check the contents before buying just to make sure.. Over here we have Pets at Home, (it used to be Petsmart) they sell guinea pig pellets which mention suitable for degus on the back of the bag..
Hope this also helps..

Thanks, but the problem is the Chinchilla food. The food I've seen around here isn't really acceptable to degus...too fatty and/or sugary.

There is no need to feed chinchilla food.
You could feed Gerty Guinea Pig food from Supreme, just pick the yellow cakes out, they are with glucose syrup. I mix it with herbs (chamomille, stinging nettle, melissa, calendula flowers,..) but feed mostly hay, only about 1 tbsp food per animal. You can also order degu feed on the internet www.brisky.com, mine love the stuff!

There are quite a few chinchilla owners in New York one might be willing to sell you some chinchilla food. Also you can order mazuri chinchilla pellets online from Chinworld.com and Lonestar chinchillas. as well as Mazuri.com and Petsmart now carries Mazuri feeds.
The recommended feed for degus is 50/50 chinchilla and guinea pig food not rabbit food.

My chinchillas don't even eat chin pellets anymore. They get show formula rabbit pellets and so do the degus. I never could get my degus to eat any kind of guinea pig pellets (they'd pick through and eat the chinchilla pellets). The chins decided they didn't like the Mazuri chinchilla pellets anymore so after some research and talking to other breeders, I switched to Purina Advanced Nutrition Show Formula Rabbit pellets. The degus and the chins are all doing very well on them. (They also get hay cubes and a supplement.) It works for me.
