Degus drifting apart...

Since Rosie's death I've noticed that my girls have been drifting apart. Hikaru and Ichigo are sisters and have always been very close but lately they don't hang out much. They rarely cuddle now which is extremely unusual and I haven't seen them play, either. Instead they tend to stay on different levels and do their own thing. Sometimes they'll randomly hang out or groom each other but it's not nearly as much as they used to.

Oh, and they are a little less then three years old.

Has anyone had this happen? I feel bad because they both seem lonely yet they are mad at each other or something. Hikaru has started throwing things around at odd hours...in a sort of rage. Meanwhile, Ichigo digs obsessively. And they both seem more dependent on me since they don't have each other to play with. I feel awful if I'm gone all day because it upsets them.

Do you think they are depressed? Rosie passed away in September and at first they seemed alright. After a few days, though, they became upset and didn't want to play....they'd just lie in my lap. But after a couple of weeks I really thought they were feeling better...and now this...

Maybe they just got in a fight and will eventually forgive each other...

I wouldn't worry too much degus go through phases like that, i know some of my guys do, they go a couple of weeks like it when they are all doing their own thing (such as someone will be in one hammock another in the wheel and another asleep in the house etc...) then they go back to normal and spend all their time together again. My two new degus spend a lot of time in seperate areas but then i always find they cuddled up in the hammock together I think its like humans it doesn't matter how much you love someone you need your own space sometimes and degus are just the same

Have you tried rearranging the cage? Or revamping it? It might bring them closer together and occupy their minds as they explore the new layout etc... I have found in the past sometimes with degus a change does them good

I haven't tried re-arranging but they did get new toys and a bed for Christmas. Maybe I'll try moving stuff around the next time I clean the cage (tomorrow).

Thank you .
