Degus Racing Each Other

Degus have really settled in today... they have spent since 9am (3 hours) racing each other to the very top of the cage (6ft) .. the pair start at the bottom, race up the the ledge, leap across to the second ledge, up the ladder, through the second cage door, up another ledge and another, and up the ladder right to the very top... then they start again going down..

Its so funny to watch, and i didnt realise they could run that fast.. wow. all i see is a furry shape running.. too fast to get a better look.. thats amazing..

Well, i think that means they're starting to settle in and they must like their cage.. they've had the sand bath this morning - thats what started them off racing, got a little too excited i think..
so i have sand all over my carpet, hay all over the carpet.. and four over excited degus.
over excited is probably not quite right, more hyperactive degus i think.. they're nuts !
they've used my hand as a trampoline - jumped from the top ledge and bounced off my hand.. almost gave me a heart attack in the process ;0) .. they've thrown food all over the place..

they must think the sand bath is better for swimming than for bathing because they dive from the top ledge straight into the sand bath sending cloads of sand up in the area and making the biggest mess you can imagine..

then after the race, they sit still grooming each other for maybe a minute and then.. they're off again..

absolutely nuts.. I've had to duck not to be hit by flying food twice, put my hand in the cage to try to get the quiet one to come to me and the next thing i know theres a flying degu thinking im a human trampoline, so after id recovered from the shock.. i put loads of newspaper on the floor and im now staying out of they're way.. at least until crazy hour's over !

anyone else's degus have nutty times like this ?

lol.....oh yes mine run riot around the cage especially when they get a cardboard box all you can hear is banging and clanking as they are dragging it all over the place trying to get it in their nest box. They also throw food around as well i often think they have no food till i find piles of it in corners etc..... they are litle tinkers at times
