fruits and veggies

ive looked at alot of websites about giving degus fruits and veggies but im still unsure exactly how much a day i can it it to them and how much to give per time. i usually give them a little slice of a fruit or veggie each day. they are about 3 months old so should i be giving them fruits/veggies everyday? hopefully i can get my cam working so i can post pics soon

I wouldn't advise feeding them fruit as its usually too full of sugar for them, they can have a little piece of apple occasionally but it only must be as a treat and they can also have the odd piece of tomato but again its amount must be limited as its too full of sugar for them to metabolize properly. You are much better sticking to veggies in my opinion and they can have a small piece or two (depending on what it is and its size) each day. Favourites tend to be broccolli, carrot, sweet potato (the skin must be removed though as its toxic to them), cucumber, green beans, cauliflower etc.... Most veggies are acceptable but please be careful feeding things such as cabbage, lettuce and peas as they can cause bloating in Degu's and cause problems for them!

Look forward to seeing some pictures very soon

Kirsty

I wouldn't feed any fruit because of the sugar content. Some people feed small amounts but I don't feed any to be on the safe side.

Veggies are good for them, though . Good veggies to feed are carrots, sweet potatoes, and small pieces of brocolli. Mine also enjoy romaine lettuce occasionally.

Just remember to remove the skins of the sweet potatoes because the skins are toxic to degus.
