How do you tell if a Degu's female?
It's probably a stupid question since I'm used to sexing Degus, but other than genitals how do you really tell if a Degu's female or male? Do they have nipples? How often do they go into heat? At what age do they start going into heat anyway?
You see, around two months ago I went into a pet store with my cousin to look at the rats (I love rats), and saw that they had degus on sale! Just our luck, they had three left, and my cousin picked out two very cute little sisters. There was only one left then, so I asked him to pick it up for me while he had the gloves on and when I asked him if it was a boy or girl he said for SURE that it was a boy, there had been something there (he has some experience in this thing too, his male degus had just passed away some two years prior). So I thought yay! A little friend for my Lucyd (7 month old baby boy). And don't worry, I know what I was getting into and I know how to introduce males. They were cage mates by four days (Which is fast, I know, but I put the cage on the floor and them by the cage and they went in and didn't come back out! They've never fought since.)
But I'm beginning to think my four month old baby Jynx is a boy after all, I was looking at his tummy today (and completely stressing him out, he hates being in the open, he always has to be wrapped in a blanket or inside my shirt) and he looked very much like a girl genital-wise. What do you guys think?
