Exclamation Teary Eyes

My younger degu seems to have teary eyes - the fur beneath both eyes is damp. I tried giving him a dust bath and he looked better for a bit but the fur is damp again (a few hours later). He's also been squeaking and chattering on and off all evening...ideas? what should i do?

What bedding do you use?

Unless he's allergic to the bedding (unlikely unless he's new or you switched to new bedding), he most likely has an infection and will need to go to the vet for eye drops.

it's definitely not the bedding cause it's the same as he's always had. he looks better today...i'll keep an eye on him and take him to the vet if the teariness continues. thanks!!

Tooth problems can also cause watery eyes so also make sure he's eating normally (both the pellets and hay). I hope he feels better .

I would take him to the vet...

My degu had something like this too. I took him to the vet because it got worse. It turned out he had a...i completely forgot the term, but similar to a sits. Luckily though I got him drops soon enough, cause it ended up being okay. Unfortunately though only a few weeks after all of that I found him one morning dying. At the moment I didn't know he was dying, but after rushing him to the vet he ended up passing away, at only about 2 yrs old. The vet wasn't exactly sure what caused it, some sort of traumatic event...but it could also have been genetics. But I would not risk your poor goo. Because for all I know what was up in his eye could have had something to do with it

Best of Luck with your goo!!
