Thinning Fur Patch

Anyone know why a Degu may have thinning fur?
Just around the sholder blades.

Bruce (Dad) & George (son) are very friendly and super active little guys. They are healthy and though squacked at each other when I first picked them up, they have really settled down.
George has his hair thinning on both sholder blades, there is no rough skin or flakes or redness or anything, he also dosn't seem fazed by it.
Could Bruce be over grooming him?

I know with gerbils sometimes the dominent gerbil will get a bit grooming aggressive and the poor gerbil getting grooming get's patches of no hair on their tails and back.
Could this be the same thing?

It is more than likely a case of over grooming or a result of them playing rough. Another reason might be he is moulting as degu's do indeed moult at various times throughout the year. I would keep an eye on it but it should grow back fairly soon

It sounds like moulting to me...all of mine are moulting right now.

Just an Update.

Dad is chewing off all the hair. I see him doing it all the time now. They are not fighting or anything, just Dad either grooms him there chewing away the fur, or I've seen him mount him and chew the hair.
Poor George he looks like crap with these two hairless spots on both sholderblades...

i have read that there is this "no chew/bite" product that you can put on them that might help you out and let the dad know not to chew on him so much... dunno... hope this helps

I agree with the above post. There is a product available over here in the UK for chinchillas to stop them chewing fur out this might be useful and worth looking out for as i'm sure you will have something simular over there and this might help
