Degus are very social, so do live happier with a friend.
I would definetly try out a new smae sex buddy for him, this may help with his behavior.

I would also start over with hand taming, let him come to you, give him a treat when he does things like that.

I agree degu's are highly social creatures and do thrive on company of their own kind. If you decide to get him a buddy you need to do as much research as you can on introductions as its not as simple as it sounds but if you put the time and effort in it is so rewarding

I agree with andrea you should start over again with him. Start talking to him on his level and start of by letting him get used to you again. Don't try to pick him up, just put your hand in his cage and let him sniff you and get used to you, once he trusts you he will climb onto your hand, let him do this for a few weeks. Once he feels comfy start lifting him gently up in cupped hands in the cage and see how he feels. Once you feel he is confident enough start trying to lift him out of the cage. Reward any good behaviour with a small treats as a treat will create a positive emotional response and help you two bond more. Can i ask, how do you pick him up?

Kirsty
