Question ...Afraid of gerbils, but have one...tips?

Ok, so my little sister got herself a gerbil a while back, and tried to hold it ONCE. It nipped her, and was too fast for her to handle, and she gave up. No-one's held it since. I personally, have been scared of gerbils since I was little, but it seems to be mine now. I feel bad. How do I hold it without it getting away? How do I pick it up? What are the chances of it escaping/biting me after not being held for about a month?

i have a gerbil and he nips every now and then and they are fast little thing's but what you could do is put some gloves on so if he bites then it wont hurt so much and try and get him out a bit each day and try not to let him know your are scared even tho its hard and when he knows your not so scared of him he will be happy to come to you!!!

He's probablty nipping b/c he is scared. Gerbils are social creatures and live happier lives in pairs or small groups. If he dosn't have a buddy to help him feel safe this may be a reason for the biting.

You'll need to start from scratch and hand tame him. Place you hand in the tank everyday but don't try to pick him up. Hand feed him sunflower seeds as treats, and when he starts eating the sunflower ON your hand he should be ready to start handling to be picked up.
Gerbils don't like to be cuddled or held, they are adventure seeking little critters always wanting to explore and play. Letting have the run of a gerbil proof room or gerbil proofed bathtub is a great way to get him to learn that your hand means he get's to go somewhere new to play.

Good luck.

I had a gerbil, she lived to about 2-3 yrs.Sadly the whole time I had her,she didn't want to be held.I found out that gerbils are not for me,as much as I loved her.I prefer animals that actually don't mind me handling them (in most cases). And I did try getting my gerb to like handling, but she wouldn't go for it.Otherwise she was very friendly.Anyway gerbils can make wonderful pets, but I understand they are usually very hyper/high strung.

If you offer him treats and things,he will get used to you.Like the others mentioned, don't let him know you are afraid.

i had a gerbal and they are fast and first let it get used to its new cage. and just to warn you cat like to kill them. i would sugest to put in your room and shut your door if you have cats. and they dont live verry long but hamsters are melloer and slower.

Don't live very long?

I've got to go and tell Chank! He's turning 8 years old this year, and my other gerbil is turning 4!
