baby gerbils in NY

well as i previously mentioned we got two gerbils from the pet store (sisters). bad idea, right? we knew there was a boy in the cage with them but the pet store swore they were 2 months old and couldn't be pregnant yet. and go figure one of them came home pregnant. she had the babies we think this morning...

so first question... does anyone in new york want a gerbil? we live in Manhattan.

second question. is it okay to leave the sister gerbil in the cage? she doesnt seem to be doing anything wrong. when the mother gerbil leaves the nest she goes in and sits on it. she sometimes brings food into the nest too. so anyway... is it okay to leave her or should we take her out?

please help! we know nothing about baby gerbils.

You have no need to try to give that gerbil away; they are social animals who live in groups and take up little space and require little food. Watching them interact together is always enjoyable.

Leave the sister in. Leave the mother alone, and give her more protein sources, such as bits of bread soaked in evaporated milk. Don't touch the nest or babies. Give them peace and quiet.

I think in 5-6 weeks they will have to be sexed and separated by gender.

Keeping pets that you have raised since birth will result in VERY tame animals, and same gender groups that are especially close. A group of three or four will be very enjoyable to watch, especially as each one's individual personality develops!

I don't know how many babies you have, but gerbil litters aren't that big. No reason not to keep them all, and many reasons TO keep them, as I said.

I have 23 gerbils here, btw.

I would keep them but I dont have the cages or the space. I live in a college dorm room that is literally 10 by 12 feet. I would love to keep them. They are the sweetest little babies ever. Also I've heard its bad to keep groups of girls in more then 3. There are only 5 babies.
