I've never had a "bear ham," but that's mostly because there are no breeders around here and I've gotten all my hamsters from pet stores. Since Panda Bear and Bleack bear just means black or black banded syrian, I see no reason to pay 20$ instead of 10 for one, so cute as they are, I don't have one.

I got my last hamsters before I knew about petfinder though. Next time I get hammies, I think I'm going to look there for some at shelters.

Yeah,it is a shame how pet stores will charge MORE for something with a fancy name. There were some panda bears and black bears in the pet store and they were twice as much as the normal syrians or teddy bear syrians. But I love them still and want one if I ever decide to get a ham again.

As Padfoot mentioned,I am suprised they don't put the name "polar bear' on white hams!

I've seen the plain goldens (I.E. the most popular syrian color) labelled as yellow bear hamsters around here before. sickening.

I've seen-

White Syrians called Polar Bears, Minks called Honey Bears, Doves called Silver Bears and the black bear and panda bear nonsense- not to mention dumb names I've seen for campbells like blueberry and blackberry 'mini' hamsters.

Bear names for hamsters are very insulting to hamsters. What about being compared to a bear is better than just being a hamster? As if hamsters are only good if you think they look like bears.

People themselves should be insulted that hamster mills and the petshop industry think you are too stupid to appreciate the correct term for an animal- and be suckered into thinking it is rarer than it's golden littermate in the next cage. There are no rare hamsters- every hamster, no matter the color or coat, is produced the very same way.

What a cute little guy.

Honestly...I cannot see why your so offended.Sure, they are all syrians with cutesy bear names. And they have these names to sell them better, but I doubt anyone is gonna see a black bear hamster and think,"Oh,that little guy must be just like a black bear"...I don't think of bears when I see these hamsters.

When you've been in hamsters as long as I have and spent years counseling new hamster owners you would see what a problem it causes. You would not believe the number of people that you cannot convince that you are talking about the same species of hamster- that maybe Syrian hamsters can't live together, but their Panda Bear hamsters can.... Worse, to me, though, are the people that KNOW better and still use the wrong labels. Not cute at all.

Yeah,now I understand where your coming from.I guess I just didn't think when I read your post,but yeah...I understand.

I once knew someone who put syrians together..."because they were in the same cage at the store"... and well there was a bloody mess, only cause she didn't research!
