Question Biting cage

Hope this doesn't sound too silly, but is it normal for a hamster to chew the bars on his cage. I worry that he will hurt his little teeth. We have a chew stick in there and i have seen him work that over. Just a new owner worrying over his little buddy...

yes that is normal, they are bored I don't have a hamster but I have gerbils and they do it all the time. I asked about it read on it ect. and it says they are bored. My gerbils have chapped noses other than that they ae fine. I put things in there for them to chew on they will for awhile, then right back to the bars they go, so I don't know lol

Do a forum Search for old threads and posts on this very common topic.

Some chew more than others.

They all chew more if they can see and hear a lot of stuff outside the cage.

ALL hamsters want to forage for food for an hou, and explore, in a play bin.

If all else fails use the cage as a play habitat and put the ham in a thirty gallon bin.

My gerbil and one of my rats do this when they want my attention...they have many things in their cages, but sometimes they just want my attention and contact.

Re: Biting Cage

You are so sweet to worry over your little buddy, as my husband and I worry so much over our two little buddies as well (2 very spoiled boy gerbils, Mick and Keith, that we just adore so much) and your worrying shows you care.
Our gerbil boys chew on their bars too sometimes, even though they have lots of wood chew toys and toilet paper rolls to chew on, but sometimes they just do the bar chewing thing...guess they just like it for some reason?
