Can I Give My Picky Eater This Tough Love?
I’m wondering about what to do with my Russian WW regarding her being a picky eater. Apologize for the length here, but if you can bare with this set up I think it will make my question more understandable.
“Fidget” is about 2.5 months old and seems to be rollie-pollie, energetic, and basically happy. Her picky eating however has me a little worried because the food that she seems to really like and eat heartily—Kaytee’s “Nature’s Benefit’s”—has been discontinued and my supply is now running low so I’ve been trying to switch her over to something else.
What I really want her to start eating is Oxbow’s “Essentials" (they look like dark hard Cheerios).* Trouble is, she rarely touches it. I supplement her food with* “Small Word’s” hamster/gerbil mix so she doesn't go hungry, but from what I’m to understand, Oxbow is a high quality nutritious brand, and I especially like its hardness which is good for “Fidgets” teeth (her chew toy stuff have gone pretty untouched). I’ve been supplementing things for now incorporating a little bit of Grape Nuts cereal (only a tiny pinch per day), a couple sunflower seeds, dry oatmeal, a couple frozen peas, corn, a green bean, and lima bean (all defrosted of course). Trouble here is that she looks like she’s gained some excess weight, so I’ve decided for the past few days to get tough and give her pretty much just the Oxbow stuff, one Kayee Fort-Diet Mouse/Rat pellet. a couple sunflower seeds, plus a tiny amount of the Small World mix. Anything dry that she leaves untouched I leave in her bowl as part of her next day's portion. She’s nibbled on the Oxbow but hasn’t really eaten much of it so far.
So here’s my question: If I only gave her the Oxbow, would she eventually just get hungry enough that she’d finally eat it because there wouldn’t be any other options? I'd eat it if I was a hamster (LOL)...seems to me if you get hungry enough, you’ll eat just about anything, right? Thanks for your thoughts and/or suggestions.
