Cheech and Cookie! [PICS]

I've had Cheech and Cookie since October 2006. They've been great. It's the first time I've kept gerbils and I would recommend them as a pet to anyone. I've kept other rodents in the past, but no rodent has previously been as easy to care for and as greatly rewarding.

Anyway, Cheech is slate and the dominant of the two, Cookie is Agouti and is a sweetheart.

Both are really intelligent, Cheech is the easiest to handle, likes to ride around in my pocket every now and again. Cookie prefers to keep his feet on the ground. Not at all nippy, just likes to keep himself to himself I think.

Anyway, they're gorgeous animals.

These pictures are from when I first got them, but I'll post some more recent ones soon.

I'm getting them an upgrade this wednesday, just a slightly more fancy vivarium. You know, with levels in and that. - I spoil them rotten!

Very handsome, cute little animals. I love how they're sharing the water bottle

I looked at some gerbils at the store today - most of them seemed quite shy and skittish but one of them was very bold and looked to be quite entertained by my finger moving across the glass. But they really are interesting animals, I love those tails.

Good to hear your little ones have such a great mama.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. (1 Corinthians 13:4)

Thank you! I love them so much, they're such sweeties!

They're really great pets. Be careful with stores, check that their fur and eyes are bright and that they don't have "kinks" in their tails. These are common signs of bad health and neglect.

If you'd like to know more about gerbils, I highly recommend :
The Mongolian Gerbil Website - Gerbil Forum. - Home

The people there really know what they're talking about, really tight-knit supportive community willing to answer any questions that you may have regarding gerbils. There are also a few breeders there who might be able to recommend you a registered breeder in your area should you wish to get some gerbils of your own.

I absolutely agree, gerbils are fantastic pets. I was quite leery and a little skittish around them for a very long time, as a child I had one who was just not very nice. But I got over my fears with a little help from my kids and the fact that gerbils are just so cute. I am so glad I got them, they provide lots of entertainment, watching them play and interact. It's cool the way they rearange their home, we give them a small stuffed animal and they tear it up and use the fluff for bedding or to hide their food in.They are such smart sweet animals, and my life is better for owning them.

Aw that's lovely! They really do make the best pets.
I remember a really funny post from the aforementioned forum, where someone cut out a "tv" out of cardboard, drew tv dials on it and stuff and mounted it on their gerbils' vivarium, it made me laugh so much!

The toy thing sounds really cute! Just be careful though, you don't want them to eat it or get their limbs caught in it! :/

Your gerbs are gorgeous!

I think that hamsters are very much like gerbils, but without the tail...

cute guys, have you ever considered some padding on the wire floors, they can easily develop bumble foot?

Yeah, don't worry that's all sorted out.
It was only a tank topper anyway, so they didn't spend a lot of time up there. Now they've got an acquarium, and today I'm picking them up a full on vivarium!

Cute gerbils. I like the gerbil in the last picture eyes. I was looking for gerbils to adopt. I couldn't find any gerbils but I found my hamster which is just as great.
