Gerbil now all alone

Hi there

I had two gerbils Jasmine and Heather, aged 2 and a half. They slept together, washed each other and were just lovely. Sadly last night Heather died.

I don't know what to do about her sister. I've heard gerbils often become depressed and die too following the death of their friend. Obviously I want her to live as long and happily as possible but I don't know how I can make it easier on her. I don't want to get another gerbil because at 2 and a half I don't think Jasmine will be around an awful lot longer but I don't want her to be lonely.

Jasmine didn't see Heather die as we were trying to give her some meds from the vet as she passed away. So she may not know she's dead. Is that a good thing? Does anyone have experience of this?

Sorry for your loss. I definately wouldn't introduce a new gerbil. Give her a little more attention than usual to make up for the absence. When our first gerbil passed I also thought that our other one would pass soon after but surprisingly 'Shredder' lived another 6 months.

You could think about adopting two new gerbil youngsters to keep her company, or like the other poster said, if she is getting along in years and is now elderly, it may just help to give her a lot of extra attention and love, with plenty of daily outside play time.

Females do not introduce well so be careful! They are the dominant gender of the gerbil species! Be very careful if you introduce another. Maybe a mirror?
