Gerbil or Robo Hamster??

We are buying two rodents for my son's 7th birthday. My older sons had gerbils when they were his age. The pet store is recommending a robo dwarf hamster. Which would you recommend?? Note that we would be buying 2 of whichever one. Thanks!!!

First of off I have to say that pets aren't presents and for a 7 year old, YOU would be responsible for the animal not him.

I personally think two gerbils would be good, hamsters esp. small hamsters may be to delicate.

Gerbils!
But you have to make sure your son changes the water/food, and please don't get a plastic crittertrail cage. They'll tear the plastic to bits. Gerbils a gnawers, aswell, so they will nibble you if they don't have anything to chew on (tissue paper, the rolls from paper towl, news paper..) Also, get them dust bath, they love dust bathing! I usually get chinchilla powder, I have a 1 gal tank and put sand in it, and let them chill out and roll in the dust.

Gerbils

Robos are very fast and can be very nippy whilst a well handled gerbil can be affectionate.

Although to be honest, i think a syrian hamster is a better option for a 7 year old

Rats actually make much better pets then both gerbils and hamsters...much less likely to bite and easier to handle.

But if your going with one of those two...gerbils.Gerbils are more fun and more social then hamsters.Hamsters are also quick to bite if disturbed.

A robo hamster should never be given to a young child. They're incredibly fast & timid & will run at the very near proximity of a human being. They should only be handled by very cautious adults who know how to hold them properly & keep them from jumping out of their hands (if they're quick enough to catch them in the first place). I tried teaching my friend (who was 22 at the time) how to hold one & even she couldn't do it.
