How old is my ham?

Is there any way to tell approx. how old a hamster is? I have had Sammy for a year now and I am not sure how old she was when I got her. Also, is there special care they should get as they age?

Mandy

Its really hard to tell an approximate age without a vet but if they have white hairs around the ears then it is younger and black if it is older.

I heard once that females stop going into heat after a certain age, is that true? Sammy still does.

I think they have heat all of their lives, but they have black hair on their ears when they are young, they get lighter as they age and then at about 2-3yrs their ears go bald.

Ive never heard the ear hair thing. But from what Ive been told, once they are full grown there isnt really a way to tell exactly how old they are. You can tell the age of most animals by looking at their teeth, but sinces hammies teeth are always growing it doesnt work for them.
And they still go into heat, but getting them prego is very dangerous for them once theyre older.

"For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older than ours they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethen, they are not underlings; they are other nations caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendor and travail of the earth."
