i'm worried about my hamster

i just got a new hamster about a week ago, and was 3-4 days old at the time. he's been perfect until yesterday, when he started sneezing a lot and biting whereas he's never bitten at all. his testicles seem a bit red and swollen and he's a lot more inactive. when we got him he was pratically bouncing around, really active, and he used to climb the walls of his cage and fall a lot, but i didn't think anything was wrong because he would still run in his wheel and be happy. he hasn't fallen lately. his coordination seems really off as well.

now he just mostly sleeps (even at night), eats a lot, won't let me pick him up, doesn't really run, has bitten people about 4 times today when he hasn't bitten once in the last week, and has just gotten a LOT touchier. i'm really, really worried, and i'm going to take him to the vet if it doesn't improve.

does this sound familiar to anyone? is there anything i can do for him for now? he's only a baby, i really hope it's not serious

What kind of bedding are you using? If its pine or cedar, that could explain some of his behavior- it can cause respitory issues, and if he is allergic to it he will itch like crazy. If he is scratching himself, that could be why he is red and swollen. That could be why he is so irratable too.

But you definatly need to get him to the vet! If he is haveing respitory problems, he needs an antibiotic.

the vet's closed now, but i'll take him first thing tomorrow! i'm using carefresh (i think it's called...) but he hasn't had a problem with it until now. he was a bit better this morning (didn't bite and let me pick him up) but he's still sneezing. i'll still take him to the vet.

Sorry I wasnt much help before, I was half asleep. It sounds like a URI. Carefresh is ok but for now, if you can, use an old towel instead until you get him to the vet. It may be that the carefresh is too dusty or he is allergic to it.

i took him to the vet this morning and they said it was the dust from the bedding after all, and so i bought him aspen instead. he's been fine ever since. he's active again too, so i guess it must have been exhaustion from running so much
thanks for the help!

How can the hamster be 3-4 days? It would not have fur or open eyes and couldn't bite??

I thought it was a mistake, I think they meant 3-4 weeks.

i don't know, they said 3-4 days at the store... i thought it was weird but i didn't really question it, he was really small and i've never had a hamster before. don't they get full-size in about a month?

If your hamster was 3-4 days, he would be pink, hairless, blind and deaf still!
The petstore most likely meant 3-4 months. I dont think can sell them at 3-4 weeks.

Since they are registered they cant sell them until 8 weeks (at least, thats how it works in the UK) but they still do it anyway

Theres really no way to tell how old they are for sure. Just by physical size, which isnt always the most accurate.
