2-3 weeks is bit early for an inexperienced person. 4-5 is better. But even then some experienceed people do make mistakes. Experienced RWW breeder can tell his boys from girls at about 3 weeks> Even earlier, I would think.. Have a look at all the posts/articles here and the websites suggested above. You may also visit the CHA, as they have very good articles.

If you follow all the advice, you should do OK. The mum should be better with her 2nd litter.

I wish every one could see the babies at this time in their life (2 weeks old) - their eyes are still closed, but they are up and running around the cage like they know exactly where they are going...... and momma keeps on picking them up (by their leg, their neck, their tail) and putting them back into the nest she made for them and they keep on coming back out - its so funny to watch as this routine between mom & babies go on for ten to twenty minutes.

* * * * * * * *

Here are their two week old pics...... ENJOY!

... all the babies look like daddy - black & white.

... they are stuffing their cheeks & eating like mom.

They remind me of my last hamster, Miss Dottie. She had similar markings. They are simply adorable! Too bad you're in Fl, otherwise I'd kidnap one I'm glad everything is going well.

The baby hamsters are 3 weeks old today and they are growing so fast... eating regular food and drinking from the water bottle.

They will be going to their new home or pet store in two weeks.

Unhappy Hello!

Hey there! I am new to this, I stumbled upon this site searching about answers for my class pet. We have a male syrian hamster, last week he seemed to develop wet tail. I have been giving him medicine, keeping him clean, as well as cleaning the cage. Other than the loose stools he seems fine, active, playful, eating... Any ideas????

The most important thing is to keep him hydrated. Have you called a vet to see if they can prescribe any medicines? Is his hair matted or does it look untidy? Wet tail is very contagious, so be sure to wash very well before touching other hamsters. I would change his water frequently and feed him pedialyte (sp?) with a syringe.

3 weeks is good time to sex, if you know what you are looking for :-)... 4 weeks is better, but they may be mature by now and procreate! So speedy and ACCURATE action is needed. But, unfortunately, even the experienced keepers make the odd mistake... read the various articles, as suggested above... good luck..

Thumbs up

The eleven baby hamsters are six weeks old today and doing good... they are going to the pet store to live tomorrow (the store that sold me a male & female instead of two males) - I hope they all find good homes... minus the two hamsters I found a new home for.
