Sand issue...

Gerbils like sand baths and well I went out and bought some sand for Ember to bathe in...she ended up eating the sand...she seems perfectly normal tho, should I be worried or shoud I try putting more sand in her cage??

I just rub chinchilla dust (not "sand") into the gerbil while in my palms. I rub it in, gently top, sides, and underside. I don't have time to wait for them to get around to it.

What I do is put them in a kritter keeper with sand in there and after a little while they roll. It took a while for them to catch on but they will roll. Eating the sand won't hurt them as long as they don't eat to much.

Thanks guys, I now have two things to try! I am going to pick up sand thursday and try this again.

Ember ate the whole bunch of sand I put in her cage!!! But she was fine, so I guess it never hurt her...but it must of tasted awesome!

all my gerbils love the sand baths and adorable rolling around in it I was wondering about them eating some of it especial the babies ones. I have a spare cage I had just sitting around and filled it with sand so, now they can take a bath run around some and can't get out When in the walk a bout we put plexie glass over the top because I have several jumpers and escape artists

I have seen hamsters grooming themselves while bathing in the sand.
