Split Cage Question

Will a 5gallon tank work for the split cage method?

I would use at least a 10, but 20 long would be preferable. Remember you have to fit supplies in there. Food, water, wheel and house. I would also put at least one chew thing in there. Just out of curiosity gerbils or hamsters? I'm guessing gerbils by your name though.
