Why??

my two beautiful gerbils died in their sleep yesterday but I have no idea why. i checked them everyday for anything that might be wrong, i was very careful, even to the point of OCD, about how they were fed and treated. i played with them daily and made sure that they were warm and comfortable with lots to play with. but yesterday morning i woke up and my boyfriend checked the cage and both had died in their sleep curled up together. it looked very peaceful and there are no marks on either, no fluids, nothing. they were only about 3months old too. im really confused as to why they had died and why they both died together. please someone, any ideas?? xx

Both are dead? Are you sure they're not just sleeping?

A few questions:
What bedding are you using?
How long have you had them?
Where were they when you found them?

If they are siblings and they are from a pet store, there is a possibility that they were inbred and could have had a genetic or neurological disorder/defect, or maybe both got sick...

(Trying to find a reason...)

How's the temperature in your house? You know, I don't know if gerbils can hibernate, hamsters can. When I lived with my parents a couple years ago, we had a VERY faulty furnace. It could get to below freezing in the house, and the furnace wouldn't kick on.

So my hamster froze to death. :/

Had the temperature in the house dropped steadily, she would have slipped into hibernation. But since the drop was so dramatic, she didn't have a chance.

How's the temperature in your house? Is it ALWAYS steady?

That's very odd. I've had gerbils dying close in days, but never the same day.
It's good that they died in their sleep, though.
Did they have water?
Food?
Did they ever fight?
You said they were 3 months old, and were big, were they bigger then the average gerbil?
Was your house cold? Hot?

my name is Jonni,
i'm weird for making my username

the temperature is almost always steady in our room where they slept as i get cold quite easily. they had plenty of food and water, they didnt have any toilet problems, no lethargy, they never fought, they were very close. they were quite big for how old they were, but i didnt really think they were that big. and yes, they were pets at home gerbils xx

Are you SURE they were only 3 months, and the pet store where you got them didn't lie to you?

went back to the pet store and the manager is stumped he says when we are ready we can have two free rodents though. he thinks it may have been a heart disorder and something made them jump and gave them heart failure. thank you for all your ideas, i guess we will never know

xx

Do you have a Carbon Monoxide alarm? I wonder if it could be something like that that killed them? Although it's probably just me being paranoid because we just had a Carbon Monoxide scare in our apartment.

I'm so sorry for your losses.
