I work at a vet hospital, and we use Yesterdays News in the litter box for all of our Declaw cats.

I use it for my two ferrets and I have not had any problems with it. My ferrets kick it all over the place but I scoop it out and I have never foudn anything in it. I also like that it does not smell.

In use with Guinea PIgs

I don't know how it is for other animals, but I will tell you for guinea pigs it is very dangerous.
I came home and found one of my babies had choked on a piece of the pellet.
It was recommended by a vet...I am changing my bedding tomorrow as the stores are closed and I need to go and get new bedding...I am not using Yesterday's news ever again and will tell people to be aware of it.
So if you are considering for a guinea pig... I might not recommend it.

Any plastic-y stuff should work, if you have enough money you could go for a melamine base, or order a custom C&C base from an online shop that sells them?
