Exclamation Molly has a HUGE lump!!

Molly has this HUGE knot on the side of her neck. I'm taking her to see Russ this week -- he seems to think it's an infected lymph node and would be "easy" to surgically remove. I started her on Baytril last week per his advice. It could also be an abcess. This is what he thinks:

<The scoop on cervical lymphandenitis-ususally caused by trauma to the oral cavity, either through bite or scratch or a piece of hay. Most often Strep zooepidemicus. Treatment of choice is excision of the whole lymph node. Alternatively is lance and flushing. Left untreated, secondary complications may include pneumonia or septicemia (bacteria in the bloodstream). Long term antibiotic therapy without intervention works maybe half the time............................ >

I will keep you all posted.

I'm keeping my fingers, toes, and eyes crossed, and saying some piggie prayers that it's not something bad.

How's Molly doing today? It sounded pretty nasty. Abcesses are icky. I watched a vet clean out one on a cat one time. It seemed very uncomfortable.

I'm taking Molly to see Russ Monday morning. Lvn, do you know if they have to anesthetize the animal before they "pop" an abcess to let it drain??

Boomer had an abscess last spring. I took him in not knowing what it was and the vet was examining him when it popped on it's own. The smell was horrible! Anyway, two days later it scabbed up and I took him back and they lanced it. I don't think they gave him anything because it was just a few minutes and he was done.

Does she seem to be in pain? Bother her?
Good luck tomorrow!

The cat was sedated but I doubt they would chance it with a guinea pig. Maybe it depends on the vet you go to.

Molly saw Russ this morning and it was, in fact, an abcess. He let me watch as he opened it up and all this thick, pastey puss came oozing out. He flushed the wound, squirted some triple antiobiotic ointment in it and gave me Baytril for the next 10 days. No pine bedding for her until the wound heals, so she's on fleece which I'm sure she's loving!

She woke up in my arms, warm and snuggly, and started chattering right away. Man, she's always got lots to say!! She's in her cage now, convelescing and eating watered down pellets and veggies. I believe she's on the mend!!

Thank everyone for all your well wishes.

I'm glad to hear it was an abscess and he drained it.

Was she sedated for this?

Oh I am so glad and relieved it was only an abscess and nothing too serious and that she is now on her way to recovery. Giver Molly some pigkisses from us all.
