New guinea pig!! With pics!!

Found a new pet shop this aft and decided to look in, i saw some cutie piggies and apparantly a show breeder supplys the pet shop with all the pigs that wont make it in the show ring. In the corner of the pen was a messy black piggie, no idea what it was but shes a cutie so i brought her home. The man in the shop who also shows piggies told me she was peruvian!! Shes only 5 weeks old and is named bam-bam, and the man also said that if she didnt have a cream and white back leg that she would have made a nice show pig...her coloured leg spoilt it. But as im not into showing i think shes a beauty.

Anyone have any tips on how to cut her hair when she gets older? What 'Style' should she have lol!

Hope you like her

Oh and so she doesnt feel left out here is her cage mate bella

I hope you double check that she is actually a female. They sex them wrong pretty often in petshops. Also, because you didn't quarantine, you could possibly have to treat both your pigs for mites and/or other illnesses. Guinea Lynx :: Quarantine

Shes deffo female, im good at sexing...i dont see why people get it wrong ive never had a problem even with my day old baby a while back.
She's be checked for any parasites and then checked again by me, the under the skin mites arnt transmittable as they are usually caused by stress..I have a piggie that it just recovering from mites, she was a scrawny runt of the litter but is now doing great.

Ive never had any problems with quarantine and as she only just came from the breeder a bit before i bought her she said i wouldnt need to quarantine.

What happens in a few days if she does show signs of URI or other illness. Then your other pigs are likely to get it and your vet bills are going to be much greater than if you would have just taken the time to be responsible.

I also suggest you read this link about parasites. It seems that you do not know much about them. Guinea Lynx :: Parasites

Its true i dont know everything about guinea pig parasites, but i know what signs to look out for ( i have read most of guinealynx topics on guinea pigs and find it useful for my course). The mites i was talking about were the mange mites and i know that they cannot be passed on or her cage mate would have it and my vet has told me they do not need to be split.
Ive read plenty of books, including guineapiglopeadia which say that if they come from a reptuable breeder they dont need to be quarantined. Illnesses/parasites of the small animal are only taught in small quanties..ask me anything about dogs or cats lol but i do know what to look for (even the veterinary nursing text book has very little info about small animals and that was recomended to me on my course) and in all my time i have kept pigs they have never caught anything from not being quarantined, dont get me wrong im not saying it cant happen.
But please, this thread was put here to show my pictures off not to have a debate about whether i am 'responsible'. If i wasnt a responsible owner would i even take my animals to the vet? would i buy them all the veggies and food they need to keep them healthy? would i even care about their health? responsible is always a thrown about term in the pet world and sometimes its done without knowing everything about the owner and what they do for their animals.

Guinea Lynx :: Mange Mites

If you suspect one of your cavies have mange mites, treat them all (they can be carriers while not showing signs) as soon as possible.

Transmission occurs primarily through direct contact with infested animals although eggs can be carried to them inadvertently.
Guinealynx, and myself, as a rescuer who gets in pigs with terrible cases of mites, would definitely reccomend treating both your new pig and your current one just as a preventative measure. You don't have to separate them, certainly, but it's definitely a good idea.

As far as coming from a reputable breeder not needing quarantine... this breeder dumped of his or her imperfects at the pet shop. That would definitely make me think twice about the quality of care they'd received. Our last bunch of breeder rejects (which we were tricked into taking, mind), had bladder stones, URIs, mites, and all manner of small wounds from fighting. Also please be aware that she may be pregnant if the breeder or petstore didn't bother to separate her from her brothers.

Good luck, and hope this helped!

What a cutie! I love the color! I have never seen a chocolate colored guinea pig. Are they a lot like degus or do they smell a little more, because they're bigger?
