Smelly GP?

I was thinking of getting a GP. But i have a question. Do they smell much? Because i have a small room and i dont really want it to stink up the place.

Depends on how well you clean their house and how often.

I would clean their cage at least once a day. I had a class GP that I took care of and we only cleaned his cage once a week and it stank. My future mother in law had a GP and cleaned it every other day and it wasn't too bad. I'm just telling you what I know. They don't smell like ferrets with an odor too them but their droppings always can smell. Someone who owns a GP might be able to help more.

No, usually guinea pigs don't smell very much if you are good about keeping the cage clean on a regular basis. The main problem if someone has a smelly piggie seems to be when they are kept in cages that are too small for them or when there are too many piggies in the same cage where their pee and poop builds up too fast.

Here is a good link about cage sizes per piggie.

Like others have said, guinea pigs don't really smell. If the cage does smell then it probably needs to be cleaned out .

They are messy, though, so I find it best to do some spot-cleaning every other day or so.

The size of the cage is important too...make sure you have a large one. Most commercial cages are too small for guinea pigs.

I've had some guinea pigs that were much messier (and thus smellier) than others, but as with most small animals that are kept primarily in a cage - if they're cleaned on a regular basis and spot cleaned if there's a specific mess, they don't have any particularly noticeable bad odor. They should just smell like hay or whatever substrate you choose to use.

My Apolla does not smell too bad, unless it is time to clean her cage. Then the cage has an odor, but guinea pigs in general do not really smell. They are messy and poop/pee alot,so they need frequent cage cleanings.

Just to add to what's already been said:

Male guinea pigs have a "stink spot" that they use to mark territory (much like a dog urinating on a post, for example... don't worry, guinea pigs don't do that!). While it has that common name, it isn't extremely putrid and not all that unpleasant, just noticeable!
