Lightbulb Archie's new home!

What do you think? He seems happier and more active than in the little hampster cage. Do you think the twine is ok for him to climb on and across? I want to add more play things of course, and will make a hammock and 2nd level.

Hubby even said that it's got room for one more!!! I will post when that happens because I know how important a cage mate for Archie is!

Any suggestions for the cage? I am going to look at other's photos of their cages for ideas.

Re: Housing Size for Rat/Rats

Sorry about the long HTML thing below but it was the only way I could figure out how to incorporate a small picture onto my post. Here is a photo of Klausse and Wolfgang's house. Ramps, hideaway huts, hammocks and lots of space for two ratties. This size rat cage is supposedly big enough for 4 grown rats but having 2 in it let me know that my boys had more than enough room to roam around and go up and down ramps, etc. It is always better to go bigger for rats. They need the space. Hope this helps.

P.S. I don't remember the exact dimensions of this cage but it was something like 30 inches wide and 30 plus inches high or something like that. You will probably get more pictures of people's ratty houses too, for other suggestions. Definitely Archie needs some nesting places that are quiet and dark where he can sleep and feel safe. And some ramps/ladders and some hammocks. I think his cage you have for him is a bit too small.

You can use this cage calculator to determine how large your cage should be. Right now, I'd say it looks a bit small for one rat, and definitely too small for two or more. Try putting your cage dimensions into this calculator and see how much more space you'd need to add:

It's 30 long, 17 tall, and 18 wide. Sure it needs more hight but for now it will do for his little mousey size body. Beats the hamster cage he's been in. I did add a ladder and a metal 3 level platform stand for him to climb and a few hanging toys too. He has made his bed in a corner and seems quite content. I spent half the day putting on the wiring so he won't go out. When he gets bigger I plan to add a connecting second cage on top.

Does he have any kind of box or hut type house to sleep in? Rats, well, rodents in general, like to have a place to go into for sleeping and security. Makes them feel less exposed.
