Exclamation Bad news, I dont know what to do

Ok, Novo has became very ill, he won't eat and moves his food i give him away from him. He looks all puffy and is jumping when he breathes. He looks very drowsy, and as if he is "Drunk". I have not gave him anything except for some anseptic*SP? cream onto his paws thats suitable for newborn babies. My vet is not open again untill Monday, and every other vet said they don't deal with small animals he will be PTS. Im stuck what should i do? Do you think hes dying on me? What if he doesn't eat? He is just laying sleeping in the same spot. My poor boy

He sounds ill...is he suffering?

he sounds lethargic (could be dehydrated), not eating or drinking and you said he "jumps" when he breathes? Is it a forward movement? That would be severe URI or pneumonia...

are his eyes half closed, any porphryin, can you listen to his lungs by rat-phoning him, can you check for dehydration through the skin pinch test?

I don't think he is suffering he just wants to lay down, i got him eating some rice, but this has all happened within a day, its so scary i feel like its all my fault. I don't know what is going on. He hasnt been really drinking no, but ive been giving him water in small amounts every few hrs.

Did you see the rest of my post I edited on? I had to run, have 2 sick rats here and Randi started gasping, so I had to add to my post afterwards.

You have to expect these things from very old rats...the clock always ticks down.

Sorry hun about your problems you are having,
His eyes are wide open and his chest is not making weird noises, but my bf said last night he heard weird noises coming from his cage but thought he was dreaming. He doesnt seem dehy, but his fur is all ruffled and puffed, he seems to kinda fall and walk slow, as if he is drunk, i have never had to deal with this so im kind of panicing. Im sorry about my spelling too i cannot really focus.

He is sick, keep him hydrated, keep him warm, try to tempt him with soft yummy food and try to get him to a decent vet on Monday, if he makes it. The older rat's immune systems don't work well, so fighting off a moderate URI can be too hard for them sometimes.

((hugs))

YOU didn't do anything, his age is against him and it often happens like this...they are fine, but aging, then a URI takes hold...

I somehow missed this post the other day... I'm so sorry your boy isn't doing well! He's pretty old by now and it gets harder and harder for them to recover as they get older. Please give us an update when you have a chance.

Maureen
