is this cage ok?

Some one offered me a cage just like this i was curious if it would be ok for my rats.

A fully assembled pet home with 1 X 2" galvanized wire mesh. Oversized swing-out reinforced door on front and top of cage with steel reinforcing around door openings. Features 2 balconies and ramps with protective lines around the balcony openings. Cage has a galvanized slide-out tray and a 1/2 X 1" wire mesh floor. Great home for a ferret or kitten who needs space to roam and play. Ships fully assembled. Overall size measures 30 X 18 X 30" high.

I know its galvanized but thats the best i can do right now.

1" by 2"? They'll probably walk right out of that. And the mesh size of the floors isn't good either. If you're going to leave the floors mesh, without covering them, they should be 1/2" by 1/2".

If I were you, I would take the cage since it's free- adn invest $6 on some hardware clothe and cover it on the outside- and gets some carpet scraps to cover the levels and ladders with. It's always nice to have an extra cage around- if someone is sick and needs quarantining or if you get a chance to rescue. I wouldn't turn it down, if it were offered to me. Just take a few dollars and a couple hours work to make it safer and more secure.

I totally agree..

take the cage! you could put something on the wire floor that would be comfortable on their feet..and for the time being till you could get something bigger...it would be awesome for your lil rats!

Coca cola removes rust...lol

Also galvanized isn't good over time. When the rats pee pee it makes it rust. powder coated is always the best way to go. Do you have male or female rats? You could probably get away with males, but probably not females. Go to walmart and buy some rubber place mats to cover the floors with and ziptie them down. That or something similar should work to cover the floors. I would take it if it's free. You can always doctor it up.

well so i dont have to worry about dealing with doctoring it up im getting a better cage thats powder coated from someone else. That other cage needs some work and is galvanized and no its not free. so the money i would invest on making it safe for the boys would be better off spent on a cage that doesnt need any fixing up.

Im gettin the new cage on the 9th of October ill post pictures when I get it.
