Chattering rats?

So my rat Skiisgaar, is around 4 months now.
He's still a tad jumpy when he gets picked up, which
is fairly understandable being that before i got him,
he changed owners 4 times in the same amount of days.

But what i'm wondering is if anyone else notices that
their rats make chattering sounds?
It's only when i'm holding him or he's on my shoulder.

I'm just not sure if it means he's scared or not?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks =]

It may be bruxing. Bruxing is when they rub their teeth together to make a type of chittering noise. It usually means they're happy or at least content.

I know what you mean! I didn't expect my younger rat to brux so soon - so I thought it was something else for a moment. But nope - they just are enjoying your shoulder.

And thank you so much!

Uhm, its true it can be bruxing but chattering teeth can also mean fear.
You said he doesnt like to picked up and so on, so I would think its fear or him trying to say "HEY! I dont like this!".

Bruxing is usually a sign of happiness or contentment, but as mentioned is sometimes a sign of fear or unhappiness.

There is a difference to the sound of fearful versus happy chattering, but until you've heard both I doubt you'd be able to tell the difference. If it's right when you pick him up and he does it for just a few seconds I would say it's a stressed chatter. If it's when he's been sitting up on your shoulder for a bit and he seems relaxed then it's probably happy bruxing.

But dont worry about it much, just try pick him up as gently as you can and spend a lot of time with him, it will fade.
I had a rat that was nothing but fearful of me, he screamed when I opened his cage door! But now he clings to me like glue. Hes a very snugly boy and I cant wait till he grows to full size.

Thanks so much for all the advice=D
I'm fairly certain it's bruxxing.
It's after he's been on my shoulder
for a fair while.
So i'm reasonably sure it's not fear.
