I have three young bucks that were part of one of my pregnant pet store girls' litters. They had been handled daily since they were 3 days old, but then right about the time they would have hit their flea stage, I went away for a week. When I got back, all of that litter was crazy and unhandlable. They'd hit their flea stage while I was gone and were terribly skittish and unafraid of jumping from any height.
Well, I've been working with them, and they're much better but still quite skittish, but they no longer jump =P But now I have a new problem that Im facing with these three that I didn't have with their sisters. They like to chew on fingers. Not in a malicious way, but in a "hey what's this hand doing here? I wonder what it tastes like!" way. And it hurts, but since they're still pretty skittish, I don't want to react in a way that would startle them and make them less likely to approach me. But I sure don't want mice that think its okay to chew fingers either. And I swear these guys have tried grazing on my armhair.
Also, is there anything that can be done to prevent the flea stage? With my second litter, I made sure I haven't left them for so much as a day, and handled them extra. Now they're in their fourth week, and none of them have had the same problem as the other litter. Was it because I was there to handle them all the time, or just a more calm litter?
