Flapping Eyeballs

My roomate's rat, Doyle, has a habit of flapping his eyeballs, or bugging them in and out (kind of like a cartoon character). We can find no reference to this in her rat book, from her usual source for fat info (a breeder she met online) nor on any of the sites we've checked. Is this normal? Is this bad? Is Doyle just an adorable little weirdo? He's two and a half and he's always done it but he's been doing it a little more often lately.

He's bruxing, he's happy.

Rats grind their teeth when they're content. When they grind it makes their eyes bug out.

You' ve been entertained with boggling. Your friend's rat was very happy and content. Rats generally start with bruxing (teeth grinding) then when they get really happy the ole eyes start buldging in and out--boggling. Though it may be startling to see it the first time, you'll find yourself trying to get the ratty into the 'mood' all of the time.

It all has to do with the connection of the muscles on the jaw, do not worry that those boggling eyes are gonna pop out!
