Health Question A.S.A.P.

Lily has some redness around her eye on the fur. What do you think this is and should I bring her to the vet?

I found this: "3.3 What's that red stuff around my rat's eyes and nose?

The red stuff sometimes seen around a rat's eyes and nose is called porphyrin. It is produced by a gland behind the eyeball and helps lubricate the eye. Porphyrin naturally drains from the eye down into the nose through a small tear duct. Small amounts of porphyrin seen every now and then are normal."

I do only see it once in a while, so I guess it's okay.

I read some places it can just be a sign of stress, same with red discharge around the nose.

They have not been under ANY stress. I have seen it only once in a while and what I read says that is normal, so I'm not that worried about it right now.

It is normal to see it sometimes on the nose or eyes. I may also be produced more if a rat is stressed or sick. If it's not something you normally see you should watch our for any signs of respiratory trouble (sneezing, wheezing, or clicking). She is probably just fine though.

Porphyrin is caused when a rat is stressed or sick and appears around the nose and eyes. But if it is not there all the time,it is probably nothing...unless there are other symptoms of illness.

If you don't see it much,it is probably nothing.Rats will sometimes wake up and have abit of porphyrin around their noses.

You only have to worry about porphryin if there's an excessive amount or if its still around after your rat has fully woken up and had a good grooming session.

Pink and ruby-eyed rats often have more visible porphyrin than black-eyed rats.

Porphryin shows up in times of stress, illness, and an injury to the eye.
