Help! mouse in trouble!

There was a rat/mouse in my house today and I herded it out. The problem now is that its just sitting on my steps rocking itself and not doing anything. Is it normal for rats to rock themselves? It'll move every now and then but most of the time its just sitting there. It doesn't even react when I stand in front of it or clap my hands in front of it. I'm not quite a fan of rats but I still want to make sure its okay. It doesn't look like any average rat, could it be that this is someone's pet? I've attached a photo of it. s

Should I take it back into the house?? I don't want to hurt myself though if its a stray rat. AAH help, what should I do?/

Thanks

Sometimes they'll rock back and forth if they're trying to see something better. It helps them distinguish the background from the foreground.

I know it's not much help but I don't really have any advice, sorry.

It may be sick.I found a wild mouse once and put it out on my step and instead of fleeing/running to safety,it sat there, kinda hunched and was just kinda rocking back and forth. The next day it was dead.So if that rat is just sitting there, and doing nothing else or fleeing for safety,it probably is sick.Maybe you should move it out of harms way,but leave it be.Wild rats and mice CAN sometimes carry viruses and diseases that can be passed on to your pets.

It looks like a regular wild rat to me (agouti is the wild color, so it's most likely a wild rat instead of someone's pet). Also, by the description given, and the way it has the eyes half open in the pic looks like it's sick or poisoned. I agree with Lisa, I think it's better to try to herd it into some place safer and let it be.

I wanted to say thanks for all the advice. I herded it into a small bush where the stray cats and dogs wouldn't be able to find it. I also put some grapes and a cap full of water next to it in case it was hungry or thirsty. sadly however, it didn't make it. It was dead when I went to check up on it a few hours later.

it looks wild to me as well, if it is really sick or poisoned, i would be wondering if theres something around your house that made it sick
