Now, for all of the animals I've ever had, I've always used pine shavings as I know there are certain types of shavings that rats cant have so mine have always had pine. My Degu's use it as well and none of them have ever had any problems with it.
I was just wondering if pine is alright to use, as I'm not positive and figured I'd just ask. Evne though I've been using it for years lol, I just thought I'd ask =]

Nope, pine is one of those that isn't ok to use

Use aspen, carefresh is a bit costly but also ok (so I heard,
personally I only ever used aspen as I never saw carefresh anywhere near where I live).
Also theres a litter out called "yesterdays news".I'm going to start using that mixed with aspen.

Pine is known to cause respitory problems so I wouldn't use it. Some people use kiln dried pine which isn't dusty and doesn't usually cause problems but I personally avoid it completely to be on the safe side. Aspen shavings are the same price but are safe. CareFresh and Yesterday's News are good choices, too.

Okay, I just figured I'd ask. I've always used pine becauase I heard somewhere that Aspen isnt good for rats. As I have rats and degu's that use bedding, I just wanted to make sure that it was okay to use because I'd never want to do anything that would hurt any of my animals =].
But okay, next time I go to the pet store I'll just pick up aspen instead. As long as it wont hurt them =].
Oh, and yes, I use Yesterdays News for my rabbits, it works wonderfully and I really like it.
Thanks you two

cedar is bad to use due to aromatic oils as is also the case with pine..i would almost say that any heavy aromatic oils found in would are not a good choice for bedding

Thats good to hear! Pine and cedar are bad,as well as any bedding that contain phenols.

I use aspen and Yesterdays News mixed.I personally dislike Carefresh.

Critter Care (as thats what they had at walmart) was extremely expensive, so I opted out.

I use ecobedding that I order online so it's cheap. I've come to find out that my rats get sneezier with wood chips then they do carefresh, but they still sneeze once in awhile. I switched to ecobedding and they don't sneeze at all.

I've also found that they burrow in the bedding which I've never seen rats do,

You can get it in St.Johns, Gwenda brought it out for me since she couldnt find aspen.I believe it was bought at "Pet City"...not sure the price...
Oops. YES. It was bought at Pet City for $10.99.
Just found the tag Says on the bag that its better than aspen.& it's environmentally friendly. No trees are cut down. It says everything on the bag. Look for "Super Shavin's"

WHAT I does is I put a thin layer of yesterdays news on the bottom of my rats cage, since Tenshi is only partially trained. She occasionally does #1 near the litter pan.We are working on that.& I put yesterdays news in their litterbox.
I use this as a bedding for my rats & mice. Its soft.Absorbs better than aspen so far. I really like it.I use yesterdays news under it though,I'm a clean freak so yeah But if you want to use a soft absorbent bedding with the litter,I recommend this stuff! It's SO soft

MUST add,it doesnt contain pine or cedar .

Hmmm...how big is the bag?

I think Amanda may have had it,now that I think about it.She was telling me something about these new shavings.

Thats greyt it doesn't contain pine or cedar and is really absorbant...now it depends on the size of the bag.Knowing Pet City, the bag is tiny for $10.99.They overprice their stuff BIG TIME.
