I Can't Tell If My Rat is Dead...

Ok,so I have a rat,Nicki. She has been going through problems and stuff and right now she's on her side in the cage. She didn't blink her eyes when I was looking at her for about 5 minutes.I can't tell if she's breathing.I almost think she is, but I'm not sure. She did move her hands and head, but that could be because of that one word that I can't think of.I'm just wondering if anyone can help me?

Touch her eye. If she doesn't blink, she has passed.

Well if this ever happens again why not just pick her up? Anyway I am very sorry for your loss. 3yrs. is a long time for a rat to live and sometimes at that age there is not much you can do for them. Once it's thier time it's just time, ya know. Don't worry she'll have plenty of ratty friends to hang with at the bridge till you come for her!

Thanks guys that means a lot to me.I didn't pick her up cause I thought she might have been in pain and didn't want to make it worse.

yeah I know it's so hard not to pick them up when they are going down hill. I have had silimar experiences and my thoughts are with you. She lived a pretty long life for rats so at least you know you were taking care of her the right way!

I am so sorry about your rat!! three years is a long life for a rat, and you should take pride in the fact that you took such good care of her that she lived past the usuall life expectancy! (its 2 years right?) My rat passed recently and she had a stroke.... almost 2 years. I LOVE HER!!!! <3 are you planning on taking another rat into your care? you should! you are very talented apparently!
