I gave Timmy a bath!

Yup! I gave Timmy a bath, his first one, but boy he needed it! I made sure I had a towel ready on the floor to plop him in it for drying cuddles. I put a plug in the bathroom sink and filled it with lukewarm water. I figured cooler is safer than hotter, I didn't want to hurt him. Once I had enough water in the sink, I turned the tap off, and gently put him in there. I had to coo to him the whole time "shh it's okay, it's okay buddy" over and over. He kept trying to climb up my arms, but I didn't wear sleeves thank gosh or i'd have a sopping wet rat on my neck! I just kept gently putting him back in the water, always with my hand so he knew it was safe. Soap, scrub, rinse. As quickly as i could, really. I was rinsing him, he tried to climb up my arm, I put him back in the sink, then he did what sounded like a defeated sigh, or he hissed at me. Either way I was done so I decided OUT to the towel! He really was such a good boy. He wasn't panicking or freaking. He was very quiet and curious. He sniffed all the things on the counter, even the water. I'd always very very gently p ut him back in the sink water. I chose the bathroom sink so that he was all ready at my waist so I could be closer to him so he'd be less nervous. The whole bath process only took less than ten minutes. I wanted to keep it short and sweet. I coudln't believe the water when I was done with him. He pooed twice near the end. The water was BLACK, I thought holy canolies! Good thing I bathed him, he was FILTHY! Note to self, do this more often! Afterwards I gave him a treat and put him in his cage, then he groomed himself to high heaven lol. He's sleeping right now, so tonight I can see how dashingly handsome and clean he is

Oh yeah, and I decided the safest soap to use on him was regular moisturizing Dove handsoap. I hope that's an okay choice? if not tell me what to use and I'll use it next time. I just wanted something to help his skin because he seems bugged by it sometimes. His skin is clear though, i've checked it a million times. He's not scratch crazy, just sometimes he goes at one spot like it's buggy. I've cut back his seed blend, which has helped his skin too.

Thats great!
Sounds like he was a brave boy! I use my bath for the boys mounthy wash. They don't mind to much, but your lucky Timmy only pooped twice, mine poo and poo until they have no more LOL!
I use a rat and ferret shampoo for them and I think the best thing you'll find with Timmy is how soft he is! I'm sure he will be handsome, let us know what you think tonight

Ratty baths! Fun!
I have had some rats who ENJOY baths and will stay nice and still or just like wading/swimming in the water...makes my job a little easier. But then I have the rats that panic! Either way,rat baths are never dull moments!

Human soap is too harsh for rats tho.You can buy special shampoos just for rats and other small animals,or you can use puppy/kitten shampoo.Thats what I use.
