Wink i made a grotto!!

yeah! my 3 girl rats are sooo happy now. i decided to make a rat cage with my hubby because i was sooo sick of cleaning a rat cage through a wittle arm hole. arg. anyway, it took one whole day to get the materials and make it.
we used:
white melamine shelving from home depot for all sides and shelves (just bought 7-48" shelves), white pegboard for the back, 1/4" vinyl coated wire for the back climbing surface, 1/4" hardware cloth for the front, and to close the cage there are 2 hook/eye closures.

we also put casters on the bottom, we cut out corners on staggering sides of shelves and used the cutout below the holes...

for the fun climbing surface in the back, we cut out staggering holes in back of shelves so that the ratties can go all the way from bottom to top easily.

luckily i used that wire in the back...because im not sure what i would have done for water bottles!!!

for the shelving... melamine is supposidly waterproof, but can scratch easily. so i bought a roll of contact paper and just covered the tops of each shelf (wasn't to hard with 2 people.) then we used white electrical tape on shelf edges to prevent any pee from going down the edges. there is also white duck tape-probally better for boys -

measurements are: 48 by 48 by 12. so much easier when working in 1ft increments. total cost was $130. for $150 total you can use 16" deep shelves, by the way.

and after 2 days in use, i have already redecorated twice (so much fun!)

Looks great! I'm sure they love it. Home-built cages are also more aesthetically - pleasing,

This is great!! I would love to do something similar, but I do not have enough room in my small apartment, nor the tools to make it! One question: How does it open? Does the entire front swing open like a frame door? I really like this cage a lot!!

it does swing open as a whole. we used a 48in piano hinge for stability...you could do the whole thing with a jigsaw only... but you may go mad we have bought tools over the years, its much easier with a tablesaw, miter, hole saw, nail gun, and staple gun

Wow that look great nice job. I was going to make a grotto style cage but do to not a lot of space made a taller then wider cage. looks kind of like one you could by in a store but with my own lil flare to it. All those art classes finally payd off. Hope your rats enjoy it.
