I used to have hairless rats...boy,I miss them! Anyway first off,do you have another ratty? Rats are social,as I am sure you know and should be in at least pairs.

Hairless rats need to be kept warmer, obviously.I would give my boys fleece blankets and also hairless rats need to eat more, due to having a higher metabolism and need a little extra protien. Also you can add abit of olive oil to their food to keep their skin soft.

I second everything Vanilla Rat says. They should be with a friend for society and warmth, preferably one with fur. They should be fed more and higher protein, although you want to watch it because a diet that's too high in protein causes real problems. Mazuri lab blocks have a pretty good protein though. And they do LOVE fleece. The other thing you have to watch is allergies and skin problems. My guy has never had skin issues, but I have read about these. They can have acne, dry skin and they can scratch and get small tears on the skin easier, so you have to watch and keep any sores disinfected. My hairless has had problems with allergies. I don't know why, but they just seem to be more prone to them, although any rat can have them. I have to be really careful not to put anything with dust or artificial dyes in Boris's cage or it makes his respiratory stuff worse fast! I also either handle him before I've put on perfume or lotion or after I've washed it off. Right now I have him on Mazuri pellets, yesterday's news for substrate, and they only treats i give him are whole foods like fresh or dried fruits or vegetables. That way if something does cause an allergic reaction I know exactly what it was and I can just take it out.

Oh and here's a warning just for you, they are always cold so don't handle them unless you're wearing a shirt that comes to your neck. Rats are great, but even if you're really comfortable with them, nobody likes to pull one out of their cleavage!

Thanks guys, that's quite helpful. We would have gotten another rattie to go with her,but her littermates we are all boys,so it's just her in her cage, but I've provided her with lots of warm stuff. We hope to get another rattie to put in with her once she's done getting quarantined and we move my other rat into the bigger cage. She will eventually have a little friend with her for sure though.

OMG!!! cant believe you named your rat Lulu. I got new rats recently and if i got a girl that was gonna be her name, lol. i had a hairless, named Cojack. lol. He was sickly though, we rescued him from an adoption place and he was REALLY shy and sick. He would not allow us to pick him up, but he LOVED to be scratched on the head. He died w/ tumors. :'( They are great, adn btw whats her friends name?
