Jack has a tumor

Jack has what appears to be a tumor on his face. The side of his face started swelling a few weeks ago and after several trips to the vet we have ruled out the other things they thought it might be. He sounds very wheezy and crackly when he breathes, but it is all nasal as his lungs are clear. It appears that the tumor has also affected his vision by pressing up against his eye, as he now seems to be blind in that eye.

I think that I am not going to have a biopsy done because my vet told me that they wouldn't be able to remove the whole thing because of its location, and also that it will be risky to anesthetize Jack given his age. So right now the plan is to put him on steroids to see if they can shrink the tumor. Of course throughout this process I will be monitoring his quality of life and am prepared to have him euthanized if it becomes necessary.

I'm so sorry. Hope the meds make it a bit better and that you still have some quality time with him. Good luck.

Jack went terribly downhill in the last 36 hours. This afternoon he was having a lot of trouble breathing so I took him back in to the vet. She said that given the progression of his condition his prognosis was very poor. I decided that the humane thing would be let him go, so he was put to sleep today.

RIP my little man.

I'm terribly sorry I absolutely cringe if I see a rats face with a lump...there's so many horrible things it could be and most do not have a great outcome.

I am glad he is out of discomfort now, but I feel for your aching heart. ((hugs))

Thanks everyone. This loss has been pretty tough to take. His brother Apollo just doesn't seem quite right without him, even though he still lives with two other boys. Thank you all for your kind words.
