Luka needs help!

Hey all,

My good friend has a year old albino rattie named Luka. Shes always had problems with her right eye bleeding since she was about 6 months, also the eye is appearing to lose "pressure" in appearance. (becoming more transparent as well) She also started developing bleeding sores she scratches continually and they seem to take awhile to heal, even then- new ones appear right after one scabs. My friend has taken her to a vet, but they cant even figure out whats wrong with her. They thought she might have had some sort of reaction to the plastic in her cage so they removed everything plastic and it didn't seem to help much with the sores..in spite of her bleeding sores and eye she is a very happy rat. She eats normal, shes playful and regular in everything else.

can anyone help? whats wrong with her?

oh and also, we just checked for any visible lice/flea infestation and there doesn't appear to be any, at least to the eye anyway, could it be mites??

are the sores from her itching herself? or is there something sharp in the cage she is hurting herself on? you can take a damp paper towel and rub it on her then look at the paper towel if there is any red or black spots it could be mites. Id think the vet would have found that though.

What kind of bedding is she on? pine and cedar are harmful to them.

You won't be able to see anything with the mites (microscopic) except those scabs and sometimes thinning fur from all the scratching. I would definitely treat her for mites since she has classic symptoms.

Back to the eye. How old is she? She may have had trauma to the eye you said? She might need antibiotics from the vet or at least human grade eye ointment to keep the eye moist and medicate it a little.
